Key takeaways

  • Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring content so engines select it as the direct answer to a question.
  • AEO covers featured snippets, voice answers and AI-generated answers; GEO focuses on the generated ones.
  • Always write "answer engine optimization", since "AEO" alone also means a clothing retailer.
  • The core tactic is the same in both: a direct, specific answer under a question heading.
A question being answered directly by an AI engine with a single cited source

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools choose it as the direct answer to a question. Instead of competing to be one of ten links, you compete to be the single answer a person reads or hears.

It sits next to SEO and GEO. This page defines AEO clearly, shows what it looks like, and explains how it maps to generative engine optimization.

What does AEO mean in marketing?

In marketing, AEO means optimizing for answer engines: systems that respond to a question with an answer rather than a list. That includes classic featured snippets, voice assistants, and AI products such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.

A note on the acronym: “AEO” on its own is ambiguous because it is also the ticker and brand name of a clothing retailer. Search for “answer engine optimization” to get the marketing meaning.

What is an answer engine?

An answer engine is any search product that returns an answer to a question instead of only a ranked list of pages. Two generations exist:

  • Extractive answers. The engine lifts a passage from one page and shows it (a featured snippet, a spoken voice reply).
  • Generative answers. A language model writes a new answer from several sources and may cite them (ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity).

AEO covers both. GEO is mostly about the second.

How does AEO differ from SEO and GEO?

Aspect SEO AEO GEO
Main goal Rank pages and earn clicks Be chosen as the direct answer Be mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers
Typical target Search results pages Snippets, voice, AI answers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity
Content shape Pages built around keywords Question headings with direct answers Direct answers plus sourced facts and consistent entities
Success looks like Position and clicks Quoted answer Share of answers that name you

The practical overlap is large: if you write for AEO well, you have done most of the work for GEO. The three-way comparison is in GEO vs SEO vs AEO.

What does an AEO-friendly answer look like?

Compare two openings under the heading “How long does X take?”

Weak Strong
“Timing depends on many factors and every project is different, so let us walk through the details.” “A typical project takes 4 to 6 weeks: one week for scoping, three for build, and up to two for review.”

The strong version names the answer in the first sentence, includes specifics a reader can check, and stands on its own if quoted. That is the entire craft.

How do you do AEO?

  1. Find the questions. Use customer emails, sales calls, search suggestions and “people also ask” boxes.
  2. Make each question a heading. Phrase it as a person would.
  3. Answer in the first sentence. Keep the direct answer to 40 to 70 words, then expand.
  4. Use the right format. Steps as numbered lists, comparisons as tables, definitions as one crisp sentence.
  5. Add checkable facts. Numbers, names and dates with a source. The original GEO research found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources increased visibility in generative answers, while keyword stuffing did not.
  6. Keep the page eligible. Crawlable, indexed, and for Google snippet-eligible. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  7. Be consistent off-site. The same description of your brand across your profiles and listings.

How do you measure AEO?

For snippets, use your search console and rank tools. For AI-generated answers, rankings do not exist, so track a fixed set of questions and record how often you are named, where, and which sources the engine cites. Because those answers change from run to run, tracking has to be repeated.

GeoGen automates this: it runs your questions daily on 15 AI engines and reports visibility, position, sentiment and citations. See how it works or pricing.

Is AEO worth doing separately from GEO?

For most teams, no. Run one program: answer-first content, sourced facts, consistent entity information, third-party mentions and measurement. Report the snippet side and the AI side separately, because the metrics differ.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of structuring content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools select it as the direct answer to a question, instead of just listing it as one of many links.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is the broader idea of winning the direct answer, including snippets and voice replies. GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited in answers written by generative AI. Most tactics overlap, so many teams treat them as one program with two names.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but it builds on it. SEO gets pages crawled, indexed and ranked; AEO shapes how a page is written so the answer can be lifted. You need SEO fundamentals for AEO to work, because engines pick answers from pages they already trust.

Is AEO real or just a rebrand?

The underlying shift is real: engines increasingly answer instead of list. The labels are inconsistent, which is why AEO, GEO and AI SEO overlap. What matters is the work: direct answers, specific facts, consistent entity information and measurement of mentions.

How do I measure AEO?

Track how often your brand or page is the quoted answer for a fixed set of questions. For AI answers, that means visibility, position and citations across engines, which GeoGen reports daily across 15 AI engines. For snippets, use your search console and rank tools.

Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?

It can help machines parse your questions, but it is not required. Google says no special markup or optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clear question headings and direct answers matter more than the markup itself.
