How Brave Leo builds its answers

  1. 01Leo is built into the Brave browser on desktop, Android and iOS: in the sidebar, in the address bar as Ask Leo, or as a full-page chat. It is free and needs no account; Leo Premium adds more models.
  2. 02For some questions, especially about current events, Leo runs a Brave Search query and adds the results to the prompt it sends to the model. Otherwise it answers from the model's training.
  3. 03Brave Search runs on Brave's own index of more than 35 billion pages, with no fallback to Google or Bing, so Leo can only find pages Brave has indexed.
  4. 04By default Leo chooses a model automatically from several open and commercial models, so the same question can be answered by a different model from one day to the next.
  5. 05Leo is a separate product from the AI answers on search.brave.com, although both draw on the same Brave index.

What Brave Leo is

Leo is Brave’s AI assistant, built into the browser itself. It reached desktop in November 2023, Android in February 2024 and iOS in April 2024. People open it from the sidebar, ask it from the address bar, or use it as a full-page chat, and it can summarise the page, video or PDF in front of them. It is free without an account, and Leo Premium (US$14.99 a month) adds more models.

Brave positions Leo on privacy: Brave says it keeps no IP addresses or logs, does not use chats for training, and stores chat history only on the device. Brave reports 128.3 million monthly active users of its browser as of 30 September 2026, though it publishes no separate figure for Leo.

How does Brave Leo find information about brands?

Leo decides per question. For some questions, especially about current events, it sends a query to Brave Search and adds the results to the prompt the model sees. For others it answers from what the model learned in training. Leo also chooses the model automatically by default, from several open and commercial models.

Two consequences follow for brands. First, the answer you see today can come from a different model than yesterday’s. Second, when Leo does search, it searches Brave’s index, not Google’s.

Why Brave’s index matters

Brave Search runs on its own index of more than 35 billion pages and does not fall back to Google or Bing. If Brave has not indexed your key pages, Leo cannot find them, however well they rank elsewhere. A quick check is to search for your domain on search.brave.com and see which pages appear.

The index matters beyond Leo, too. Brave sells access to it through the Brave Search API, and Anthropic listed Brave Search as a sub-processor for Claude’s web search in March 2025.

What GeoGen measures for Brave Leo

Visibility, mentions, average position, sentiment and competitors, per prompt, language and country. Brave Leo is one of 9 engines GeoGen reads as a user sees them (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Mistral, Brave Leo, Claude Haiku), so you can compare it on the same prompts with ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

Which prompts to use

Use your category, comparison and “what is [brand]” prompts. Brave’s pitch is privacy, so if data handling matters in your category, add prompts about privacy, tracking and data storage: those are the questions where Leo’s answers name specific vendors.

What to do with the results

If Leo names you inconsistently, look at the daily pattern before reacting: a model change can move the answer without anything changing on your side. If Leo never names you while other engines do, check whether Brave has indexed your pages and whether independent sites describe you clearly, since those are what Leo can find when it searches.

Frequently asked questions

How does GeoGen read Brave Leo?

As a user sees the answer, one of 9 engines read this way. One run of one prompt costs 1 credit, so every plan can include Brave Leo, Micro and Standard too.

Does Brave Leo use Google results?

No. When Leo searches, it uses Brave Search, which runs on Brave's own index with no fallback to Google or Bing. A page that ranks well on Google can still be missing from Brave's index.

How many people use Brave?

Brave reports 128.3 million monthly active users of its browser as of 30 September 2026. Brave does not publish separate usage figures for Leo.

Is Brave Leo the same as Brave Search's AI answers?

No. Leo is the assistant inside the browser. Brave Search has its own AI answers on search.brave.com, which work in any browser. Both use Brave's index, but the models and interfaces differ.

Why does Leo's answer about my brand change from day to day?

Leo chooses a model automatically and only searches for some questions, so the same prompt can be answered by a different model, with or without search results. Daily runs show the pattern behind that variation.
