Google AI Overview API: Is There an Official One? What to Use Instead

There is no official Google AI Overview API. See what Google offers, how SERP APIs parse AI Overviews, and how a managed visibility API compares, with working code.

Key takeaways

  • As of October 2026 we found no official public Google API that returns the content of AI Overviews.
  • Google's documentation says traffic from AI features is reported inside Search Console's Performance report, which covers your own site only.
  • SERP APIs parse the AI Overview from a live Google result, one query per request, and leave scheduling and storage to you.
  • A managed visibility API such as GeoGen runs your prompts daily and returns mention status, citations and trends for Google AI Overviews.

There is no official Google AI Overview API. As of October 2026 we found no public Google endpoint that returns the text or cited sources of an AI Overview. Your options are Search Console for your own site’s traffic, a SERP API that parses the overview from a live result, or a managed AI visibility API that tracks it daily.

Is there an official Google AI Overview API?

No. Google’s own page on AI features in Search tells site owners that traffic from AI features is included in overall search traffic in Search Console and reported in the Performance report. The page does not mention an API for AI Overview content.

That leaves a gap. Search Console tells you how your pages performed. It does not tell you what an AI Overview said, which competitors it named, or which URLs it cited for a given question. Developers who search for a “Google AI Overview API” almost always want that second kind of data.

What are the options for getting AI Overview data?

Option What you get You build Fit
Search Console Your own site’s traffic from AI features in the Performance report Nothing Measuring your own clicks and impressions
SERP API The AI Overview for one query, parsed from a live Google result Scheduling, storage, analysis Spot checks, custom scrapers, research
Managed visibility API Daily mention status, citations, competitors and trends for your tracked prompts Your integration only Dashboards, reports, agents

SERP APIs that parse AI Overviews

Several SERP providers return AI Overview content. SerpApi, for example, works in two steps: a Google search returns an ai_overview.page_token, and a second request to the google_ai_overview engine fetches the overview content. The token expires within one minute of the search, so the second call must follow immediately. Output is JSON by default, with HTML and markdown options. DataForSEO’s LLM Mentions API also covers Google AI Overviews, as a mentions dataset rather than a per-query parser (see our comparison of AI visibility APIs).

Trade-offs to plan for:

  • One query per request. Tracking 200 prompts daily means 200 calls a day, plus the second call where the provider uses a token flow.
  • Timing. AI Overviews can load after the rest of the page, so a provider that does not wait returns an empty or partial result.
  • Variability. Location, language and device change the output. Pin them in every request.
  • No history. You store the results and compute visibility yourself.

Managed AI visibility APIs

A managed API turns the problem around. You define the prompts once, the vendor runs them on a schedule, and the API returns stored results and aggregates. GeoGen tracks Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode as separate engines, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and returns mention status, competitors, citations and visibility trends through a REST API.

The trade-off is control. You see the answers for your tracked prompts, not an arbitrary query on demand, and GeoGen has no classic SERP endpoint.

How do I get Google AI Overview data from the GeoGen API?

First list the models and find the Google AI Overviews entry. The GET /v1/models response returns each model’s uuid, which the other endpoints accept in a comma-separated models filter. Then pull responses for your entity where your brand was mentioned.

import os
import requests

BASE = "https://api.geogen.io/v1"
HEADERS = {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['GEOGEN_API_KEY']}"}  # wsk_...
ENTITY_ID = os.environ["GEOGEN_ENTITY_ID"]

# 1. Find the AI Overviews model UUID
models = requests.get(f"{BASE}/models", headers=HEADERS, timeout=30).json()["data"]
aio = next(m for m in models if "overview" in m["name"].lower())

# 2. Responses from that engine in the last 30 days where the brand is mentioned
resp = requests.get(
    f"{BASE}/responses",
    headers=HEADERS,
    params={
        "entityId": ENTITY_ID,
        "models": aio["uuid"],
        "period": "30d",
        "mentionStatus": "mentioned",
        "limit": 20,
    },
    timeout=30,
).json()

print(resp["pagination"])   # {"total": ..., "limit": 20, "offset": 0}
for item in resp["data"]:
    print(item)

# 3. Visibility trend for the same engine
trend = requests.get(
    f"{BASE}/trends/visibility",
    headers=HEADERS,
    params={"entityId": ENTITY_ID, "models": aio["uuid"], "period": "7d"},
    timeout=30,
).json()
for point in trend["data"]:          # [{"date": "...", "score": ...}]
    print(point["date"], point["score"])

The same call from the shell:

curl -s "https://api.geogen.io/v1/trends/visibility?entityId=$GEOGEN_ENTITY_ID&period=7d" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $GEOGEN_API_KEY"

To see which sources Google AI Overviews cite, call GET /v1/entities/citations with the same entityId and models parameters. For the full create-track-read flow, follow the tutorial on tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT via API; the calls are the same, with a different model filter.

Which option should you pick?

  • You only need your own site’s AI feature traffic. Use Search Console. It is free and first-party.
  • You need the exact overview text for ad hoc queries or research. Use a SERP API, and budget for the storage and scheduling code.
  • You need ongoing brand visibility, citations and competitors in AI Overviews. Use a managed visibility API, or connect an agent through the GeoGen MCP server and ask questions in plain language.

Whatever you choose, keep location and language fixed, and compare at least a week of results before you trust a trend. For the wider field of vendors, see the pillar comparison of AI visibility APIs and the rest of the API and developer guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Google AI Overview API?

No. As of October 2026 we found no official public Google API that returns AI Overview content. Google's documentation points site owners to Search Console, where traffic from AI features appears in the Performance report. For the overview text and cited sources, you need a SERP API or a visibility platform.

Does the Search Console API include AI Overviews?

Google says sites shown in AI features are included in overall search traffic and reported in the Performance report under the Web search type. That shows how your own pages perform, not what the AI Overview says or who else it cites, and there is no flag to isolate AI Overview appearances.

Is scraping Google AI Overviews allowed?

Automated access to Google results can conflict with Google's terms, and doing it yourself means handling blocks, proxies and layout changes. Commercial SERP APIs run that infrastructure for you. Review each provider's terms and your own legal position before building a product on scraped results.

Why is my AI Overview data different from what I see in the browser?

AI Overviews vary by location, language, device and time, and they can load after the rest of the page. A SERP API that does not wait for the overview or uses a different location returns different text. Fix location and language in every request, and compare results over several days.

How do I track my brand in Google AI Overviews over time?

Define a fixed prompt set, run it on a schedule, and store whether your brand is mentioned and which URLs are cited. You can build that on a SERP API, or use a visibility API such as GeoGen's, which runs the prompts daily and returns trends and citations.

What is the difference between Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for APIs?

AI Overviews appear on top of the regular results page, while AI Mode is a separate conversational interface. Some providers cover only one of them. GeoGen tracks both as separate engines, so you can compare how each answers the same prompt.
