Best API for AI Visibility: AI Search Data APIs Compared

Compare APIs that return AI answer and brand visibility data: GeoGen, DataForSEO, SE Ranking and SERP APIs, by data, engines, pricing model and fit (Oct 2026).

Alessandro Benigni · Co-founder & CMO, GeoGen Updated 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • The best AI visibility API depends on whether you need your own tracked prompts, market-wide mention data, or raw parsed search results.
  • GeoGen and SE Ranking track prompts you define and return daily results; DataForSEO's LLM Mentions API queries a broader mentions dataset.
  • SERP APIs such as SerpApi return Google AI Overview content per query, but you build the tracking, storage and analysis yourself.
  • Pricing models differ sharply: pay-as-you-go credits, subscription-bound endpoints, or both, so model your volume before you commit.
  • Check redistribution terms before reselling any of this data inside your own product.

The best API for AI visibility depends on the data you need. GeoGen and SE Ranking track prompts you define and return daily results, DataForSEO’s LLM Mentions API queries a wider mentions dataset on demand, and SERP APIs such as SerpApi return one parsed Google result at a time. This comparison is current as of October 2026.

What counts as an AI visibility API?

An AI visibility API returns data about how AI engines answer questions that involve a brand: whether the brand is mentioned, where it appears in the answer, which URLs the engine cites, and who else is named. Three different product shapes get called by this name:

  1. Managed tracking APIs run your prompts on a schedule and expose the stored results (GeoGen, SE Ranking).
  2. Mentions datasets let you query mention counts and top sources for a keyword, brand or domain without defining a tracking project (DataForSEO LLM Mentions).
  3. SERP and scraper APIs return the raw content of a single search result, including an AI Overview where one exists (SerpApi and similar).

Pick the shape first. Comparing a SERP API with a tracking API on price per request is a category error.

How do the main options compare?

All vendor details below were read from the vendors’ own pages in October 2026. Prices and limits change, so confirm them before you build a budget around them.

GeoGen API

The GeoGen API is a REST API in beta at https://api.geogen.io/v1 with more than 30 endpoints, authenticated with a workspace API key. It covers entities (the brands you track), prompts, tracking status, responses with mention status, competitors, visibility and sentiment trends, citations, and query fan-outs. The OpenAPI spec is public at docs.geogen.io/openapi.json.

Pros: you get the same daily data the dashboard uses, across 15 engines, plus a CLI and an MCP server for agent workflows. Cons: it is a tracking API, so you cannot ask it for arbitrary market-wide mention counts on prompts you did not add, and there is no classic SERP endpoint. Query fan-outs are currently available for Grok and Perplexity.

DataForSEO AI Optimization API

DataForSEO’s AI Optimization suite includes the LLM Mentions API (brand, keyword and website mentions in LLMs, with sources and AI search volume), an AI Keyword Data API, an LLM Responses API and an LLM Scraper API. Per its product page, LLM Mentions covers ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and the LLM Scraper covers ChatGPT and Gemini.

Pros: usage-based pricing with no monthly subscription, a sandbox for test requests, and endpoints for top mentioned domains, pages and brands. Cons: you pay per request and per row, and the pricing page’s own worked example does not match its listed rates (a 1,000-row request is shown at $0.05, while $0.1 plus 1,000 rows at $0.001 would be $1.10), so ask DataForSEO for the real figure before budgeting. Per the docs, LLM Mentions supports only live mode.

SE Ranking AI visibility API

SE Ranking states that API access is included in every plan and describes endpoints for brand mentions, average position, share of voice against up to 10 competitors, the prompts where a brand appears, and daily prompt-tracking results. It reports results per engine for Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Pros: a free credit allowance to start (100K credits per the page) and a documented split between credit-priced research endpoints and subscription-bound tracking endpoints. Cons: two cost layers to model, and the page does not describe redistribution terms.

SerpApi and other SERP APIs

SerpApi exposes Google AI Overviews through a two-step flow: a Google search returns an ai_overview.page_token, and a second request with engine=google_ai_overview fetches the overview. The token expires within one minute of the search, so the second call must follow immediately.

Pros: exact Google output for any query, in JSON, HTML or markdown. Cons: one query per request, no scheduling or history, and you build the tracking layer yourself. Our companion piece on the Google AI Overview API covers this route in detail.

How do I choose?

Match the tool to the job:

  • You are building a dashboard or report for a defined set of brands and prompts. Use a managed tracking API (GeoGen or SE Ranking). You get history, competitors and trends without storing anything yourself.
  • You want to explore a market or find which domains AI engines mention for a topic. Use a mentions dataset such as DataForSEO LLM Mentions.
  • You need the exact text of Google’s AI Overview for specific queries. Use a SERP API and add your own scheduling and storage.
  • You are wiring AI visibility into an agent. Check for an MCP server. GeoGen publishes one (npx -y @geogenio/mcp-server), and the GeoGen MCP server page lists the setup.

What should I check before committing to a vendor?

  1. Engines you actually need. Count them against your audience. A tool that skips Gemini or AI Mode leaves a blind spot.
  2. Whether data is read as a user sees it. GeoGen reads six engines as a user sees the public answer and queries seven more through the model API. Model-API answers can differ from the consumer product.
  3. Rate limits against your refresh pattern. GeoGen allows 100 read requests and 20 write requests per minute per key, and 10 entity creations per hour per workspace.
  4. Redistribution. If your customers will see the data, ask for written terms.
  5. Docs quality. A public OpenAPI spec lets you generate a client in minutes. GeoGen, SE Ranking and DataForSEO all publish reference docs; judge them by trying one endpoint end to end.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI visibility API?

An AI visibility API is a programmatic interface that returns data about how AI engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity mention, cite and rank a brand. Typical fields are mention status, position, sentiment, cited URLs and competitor share, delivered as JSON for dashboards, reports or agents.

Is there an official ChatGPT API for brand mentions?

No. OpenAI's API gives you model outputs for prompts you send, but it does not return what the public ChatGPT product shows users or any brand-mention report. To measure brand mentions in ChatGPT answers you need a tracking service that runs prompts on a schedule and stores the results.

What is the difference between a SERP API and an AI visibility API?

A SERP API returns the contents of one search result page per request, including an AI Overview when Google shows one. An AI visibility API runs a set of prompts repeatedly across engines and returns aggregated metrics such as visibility percentage, citations and competitor ranking, so you do not build the pipeline.

Which AI visibility API is cheapest?

It depends on volume. DataForSEO and SE Ranking price by usage credits, so small experiments cost little, while subscription platforms such as GeoGen bundle daily prompt runs into a monthly plan. Estimate your prompts per day, engines and history needs, then compare the total monthly cost.

Can I resell AI visibility API data inside my own product?

Only if the vendor's terms allow it. Most vendors restrict redistribution by default and offer partner or enterprise agreements. Read the terms, and contact the vendor before you build a customer-facing product on their data.

Can I use these APIs from Claude or Cursor through MCP?

GeoGen publishes an MCP server, so Claude, Cursor, Windsurf and GitHub Copilot can query visibility data directly. Check each other vendor's documentation for MCP support and the current tool list before you plan an agent workflow around it.
